Hi,

Im currently doing an apprenticeship, 2 years down the line. Im just trying to plan ahead and get a clearer understanding of where i need to go.

I was looking at the City & Guilds: Design, Erection and Verification course. Does anybody know if you do a 2391 test and inspection course as part of this? Which also brings me onto my other question, i've heard that there isnt such thing as a 2391 anymore, its split over 2 different courses?

If anyone has any information, will be helpful. Thanks!

The C&G 2396 is the Design, Erection and Verification course.
It does not include the 2391.
The 2396 course is a level above the inspection and testing courses that have replaced the 2391:- the 2394 for initial verification and the 2395 for periodic inspection.

Thanks Rich.
So im guessing you can go straight to the 2396, without the 2394 and 2395.

Does design and verification cover testing, therefore wouldn't need to do all 3, just the 2396.

Thanks again

The "standard" progression would be to take the 2394 soon after having completed your core training.
Once you have some good experience behind you would take the 2395 to progress to periodic inspection.

If you then wanted to hone your skills as a competent electrician you may then consider taking the 2396.

You could take the 2396 on its own but is does not specifically cover the basics, it is about detailed installation design.

City and Guilds state in the 2396 qualification handbook.

Before undertaking this qualification candidates should seriously consider undertaking the Level 3 Award in Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations (2394) and/or Level 3 Award in the Periodic Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations (2395) as well as obtaining industry experience. It is also strongly recommended that candidates have achieved either the City & Guilds Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS7671) (2382) or similar qualifications where candidates have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the 17th edition in order to ensure they have every opportunity of achieving this qualification.

Who is the qualification for?
It is intended for personnel in electrical contracting companies who have responsibility for the quality of the design, specification, installation and testing process. It addresses, in particular, the implications of the Wiring Regulations for Electrical Installations.

What does the qualification cover?
It allows candidates to learn, develop and practise the skills required designing and scoping electrical installations.
What opportunities for progression are there?
It allows candidates to progress into employment or to the following City & Guilds qualifications:
• Level 4 Higher Professional Diploma in Building
Services Engineering (4467-04)
• ILM Management and Leadership qualifications
