Hi all,

Does anyone know if you can put Li-ion batteries in a dewalt 18v combi drill that was sold when nimh batteries were all the rage? Mine have finally died on me and so every few holes kills the good battery and the other doesn't charge.

Do the li-ion batteries fit?
Obviously I would need a new charger too.

sent using an Ice Cream Sandwich. Mmmmm...

Asked this question myself recently when I bought some DeWalt kit as they are stopping production of NiCad soon and was told LiIon will fit and work, backwards compatible possibly with new charger, some chargers do Li and NiCad so just check what it says on yours.

From what I've read, I'm also of the opinion that they are backward compatible, but that you need the right charger, the older ones can't do the Li-ion batteries.

I think its the Nano range of batteries that were back compatible. Couldn't of been that good though as they didn't seem to take off.

The new Dewalt XR Li ion batts won't fit as they're slide type batteries.

Thanks David.

Just looked at the prices - they're a lot more expensive than I thought they would be - I think they're more expensive than new ones!

Still looking though as a larger capacity is tempting

Not sure on the Li-On stuff, but "all-battery-shop" on Ebay does some affordable replica batteries. As posted elsewhere I got a 14.4v Dewalt replica from there around 18 months ago and its still going the best.
