I am probably going to ask the silliest question on the forum but hey here goes.

What is electric,

No seriously i've just finished college level 3 2330, i am also 17th edition qualified have never been on a building site, so other than in the classroom at college i am a total novice in the sparky world.

My question is whats the difference between an electricians mate and a electrical improver and can someone detail for me the different jobs they would do on site. Obviously a rough list not every little job.

Again sorry to ask suck a lame question but im sure you all started somewhere and i would really appreciate the help.

Cheers all

as far as i'm concerned a mate is a labourer, passing screwdrivers fitting back boxes chasing etc..

an improver is someone on the make, studying and gradually taking on more skilled work.

i think what we're talking here is the self employed route into the industry. Until you finish your college courses and gain enough experience you are an improver. The JIB definition is someone who has done the courses but doesn't hold the NVQ level 3. Once you get the NVQ you can apply for a gold card and call yourself a spark.

This is a contentious issue and as a caveat I declare that this information is not personal opinion and I'm not interested in a debate about 'what is a spark' etc..

Thanks.

It varies between companies, but 'improver' implies you will go on to become an electrician; there are guys out there who are happy to work as a 'mate' or 'labourer' and not really interested in 'improving' themselves.
