Dooby

Yeah I know there's loads of threads, I searched on 'dimmer' and still can't figure it.

I changed a ceiling lampshade/fitting for a friend lately. It's a single light controlled by a single old school dimmer switch. Lamp she had before was I THINK 60w. Or I just assumed it was. This new shade stated 40w. Now I changed the fitting despite never having seen wiring like it in my life, seemingly random black and red in rusty conduit (old council concrete)

THe light worked, dimmer worked etc, sorted. Since then I've been told it's stopped working. Seems the lamp's blown.
Now I'm assuming it's a relationship between dimmer and lamp, I didn't think to check the specifics of the dimmer switch - is the bulb too low for it? What have I done wrong...?

Edit: will go along in a few days and open up the dimmer switch and see what that says. And check me wiring's still sound of course..

Ok to clarify and poke you all a bit - info I have seems to be that some dimmers don't go lower than about 60 watts. However going through Homebase and B and Q online I can't find any mention of a minimum.

Also - a lot of people talk about the dimmer switch itself blowing. How could you tell if a dimmer switch was blown? Don't have a lot to do with dimmers.

Anyone at all? Am so tired after a day banging up thermostats, I may have passed out if anyone answers...

I guess the lamp (bulb) has been changed. Now onto the dimmer, does it switch on the lamp but does not dim it? Or does it not switch the lamp on at all?

Check your connections at the fitting for any scorch marks, maybe just a bad termination has fried the dimmer or a poor connection of the lamp itself? Or it could be the simple answer that it was time for the dimmer switch to pack in just after you've worked on that circuit (hate when this happens. "It was ok before you changed that socket/fitting etc!!).

I'll keep an eye out for your reply just in case no one else looks
