Had a call from someone complaining about there dimplex XT24 series E storage heater being dangerously to hot in the mornings.

Sounds like a heat control issue. Anyone have any theories?

Yes people are stupid!

I was recently asked to look at a storage heater because it appeared to be hot? So I checked voltage blah blah nothing wrong with it. Then they were surprised because I charged them for checking it, or having done nothing as they called it.

I think people forget over the summer and the first time they switch them on they're surprised because they get hot.

Considering that the input dial adjusts the stat, and is designed specifically to alter the heat level that the heater reaches, and as the overheat stat has apparently not operated, I would doubt very much that replacing the stat would have any effect.
I suppose that it is possible (although I consider it very unlikely), that both stats have failed.

On the basis of no evidence, inspection or tests, other than a statement from the customer, to suggest component part replacement is just plain stupid. An initial inspection will more than likely reveal that the input regulator is set at maximum because the last time the storage heater was used was in the deepest, darkest, depth of last winter. The logical step in that case is to back the input regulator off (as Spin' wisely suggested) to half way and gauge the customers view to the change the following morning, all being well they will notice a reduction. It may need further adjustment, one way or the other to suit the customer preference, the customer can do this themselves (with guidance if required) each successive night until they reach a comfortable setting.

MS - you contribute some excellent posts to the forum, but do you really need to be so rude? I'm no shrinking violet, but am increasingly fed up by experienced guys who shoot down others with less experience who dare to offer an opinion. By all means, offer your (typically spot on) advice, correct errors etc but it creates a much better forum if it's done in the right spirit!

Regards.
