just wondering if anyone owns such a vehicle and how they find it as Im looking at one for a couple of reasons
1 the weather up here and as the SIL n BIL live 4 miles out in the middle of nowhere its nice to be able to visit then without having to turn back due to North Lanarks councils inability to do their job
2 2 kids so when the neice or nephews come to stay I cant fit all the kids in my senic due to kiddy seats
3 I want to do a small bit of offroading for fun
4 and most importantly I WANT ONE

the one Im lookin at has been owned by same guy for 5 years he has recently got a D3 I know him and his aptitude to cars ,vans ect is Fix it as soon as it rattles And service it when its due not when it comes up his humph Its clean no dents bumps just a couple of small scratches on the surface
Realy like to know what the MPG is like on long journeys as I dont do much jumping around so that doesnt bother me much

They break down a lot and Suzukis are better offroad :tongue3:

If you're not going down heavily rutted tracks and don't need 7 seats I'd recommend a Subaru Forester. Working on a fair few farms and occasionally ending up in naff places via kayaking and shooting I was looking for something that worked in the rough*, didn't drink fuel like mad and still handled nicely (unlike most 'offroaders' that feel like driving a helium balloon through hell). Love the wagon, reasonably priced too

*Non turbo comes with lo range and a limited slip diff which is rare for what is still pretty much a soft roader. Decent tyres won't kill your wallet either

The words Land Rover should strike fear into your heart unless you like relentlessly fixing it. Why not go for the best, a Toyota Landcruiser. Personally I’m with parker56 and would go for a Mitsubishi. A black shogun sport is proper eye candy!

I beg to differ, as a bit of a landrover man (owned 4 in the last 6 years and still have 2) I would say its a good buy. The disco is a good workhorse once all the problems have been fixed, which if he's does things as you say then i wouldn't expect much wrong with it. i wouldn't expect much over 35mpg out of it. The TD5 is a good tuneable beast as well. As for suzukis being better off road well they are light and thats about it pulled a couple out with my old freelander!! Toyota's are good and reliable and i wouldn't have a mitsi if you gave it to me!!

Chris

i agree with chris, my disco is a 300tdi and has never let me down rain, wind or snow and at 15 years old thats not bad.
the disco is a great work horse and comfy too (td5 more so) and i would say 35mpg is best its more like 30mpg (depends how you drive it) though i would think about having it chiped as they do run so much better (gives a great power curve)
the d2 does have loads of space too.
one of the things that can go wrong is the air suspension, but there are many kits out there to change it back to coil. (early td5 had coil i think)
they dont suffer from the water or rust problems like the d1s did and normal have led an easy life

land rovers are the best 4x4xfar
with over two thirds of all landys ever mad still goin i wouldnt say they break down all the time!!!

ok so we do have 3 discos, a 110, a 90 and a s1 1952 so i may be a bit biased!!

i would check out

www lro com/forum3/

and get a copy of land rover owner international mag (good buying guide in back)
cheers
dave
ps sorry for being a landy geek lol

Why would you want to buy a disco then start fixing it??????????
Never had any problems with my shogun 70,000 in two years, great motor did everything I ask of it.
Just ask yourself how many range rover /disco you see on the hard shoulder on the motorway.

I wouldn't have a shogun/land cruiser etc etc if you payed me!!, horrid to look at, not great to drive, and All of them have interiors lifted straight out of a 1983 Datsun cherry!!, the japs may do reliability well but they cant design a nice car for toffee, oh wait, that's right, warriors, shoguns, navaras, pathfinders etc etc all have issues of engines letting go with catastrophic engine failure at around 80k, if you want super reliability and you want to go anywhere then it had to be a defender !!, if not disco/range all the way, just avoid the v8's lol. Oh and for the record the old jeep Cherokee are good and pretty much bomb proof, but cost about the same as a veyron to run lol

I've a disco on my drive, possibly worst car I've ever brought also just been told gearbox is on it way Out that's another 700 down the pan that's after a new front prop and powetsteering box !, o only brought it a few months ago. If you like laying on you back in the rain wobbling bits under cars and getting mucky get a disco, if not avoid like the plague....

never drove a jeep so can't comment, works van was a toyota hi ace LWB 200000 mls with just normal running cost & will still have it on the fleet as a service van.

I think its the same anywhere for anything, You get good and bad of everything. I know a bloke with a nissan who has very little go wrong with it and in the same respect know plenty of people with shoguns who say they need a fuel tanker behind it. Yes Landy's do go wrong and yes they can be expensive to fix but, so can all the others. As said i am a landy man you won't change that. My defender has been good to me and i have just been fixing Previous owners poor maintenance!
Poor Maintenance Bad car simples!! i also know of disco td5's with 300,000 miles on the clock and regularly tow up to weight limit where the owner does nothing but maintenance at the stated intervals

Your choice. I always said i would never own a ford and now there are two on my drive and i'm happy with both, they do exactly what it says on the tin.
Horses for courses and all that.

Chris
