I recently fitted an outdoor socket primarily for a midge machine, although knowing the homeowner anything may well be used on it, from the kitchen RFC on a 2.5mm T&E spur I fitted a selfcontained IP X5 clipsal unit with 25A RCD and fitted a 16A MCB, I have RCD discrimination @1X and the upfront RCD trips also @x5 which as I see it is desirable however whats the regs on this as I am going in circles prob cos I am biased

Hi yes its a midge killer turns calor into some gas that the midge loves then it dehydrates them, bit like beer actually
pull about 3A

The OCPD is less than the maximum rating of the RCD 16<25 so that complies.

Is there a 30mA RCD protecting the kitchen RFC as well as the RCD socket???

Have a read of 531.2.9 and particularly the part about "necessary to prevent danger"

To be honest you lost me al ittle with the @1 and @5 part, but I assume you have RCDs in series, hence the reg

Yes there is a 30mA RCD on the board protecting RFC,s and Lights so yes RCD in series and sorry Malc 1x tripping current and 5 x

so why have you gone to the trouble of fitting a second, unwanted RCD?

Well at a fault of 30mA on the outside socket only the local RCD trips no brainer really 531.2.9 like malcolmsanford said

i stand corrected. from that, it appears to say that RCD discrimination is only required if to prevent danger.

It was a judgement call this guy is a bit of a diyer with all sorts of power tools table saw being the most dangerous and although the socket was specified as for class 2 low demand appliance I can see allsorts of stuff going in there, plus a load of work is getting done to property of his next door so I can see the local chippy, builder, gardener using it once they know its there
