Hi,
Just before Christmas I changed a faulty dimmer switch for my sister. This dimmer switch stopped working completely when one of the bulbs blew. She has a light fitting that holds 4 bulbs. The rating for the dimmer switch was min 60w and max 400w. I am guessing that this blew because the max rating was too low, am i correct in thinking this?
On this basis we replaced the switch with a max 500w dimmer. This is working fine now, but there is a buzz coming from the switch. My sister tells me that this has always been the case for as long as she can remember, but I am curious as to what is causing this buzz. I realize that this might be a straight forward problem, but as I said I'm curious and learning so need to ask!

a lot of dimmers buzz. only way out is to go for a good brand name and see. remember, if your lamps are halogen, up your dimmer rating by at least 60%. eg if you got 400watts total, use a 700watt dimmer.
