Hello to all the good people out there.

I have a fuse board upgrade to do soon and have told the customer that I need to get an isolator fitted.

Its TNCS, 100A bs1361 fuse, 25mm tails, 16mm earth, 10mm bonding.

My questions are:

Who call the dno and who picks up the bill?
And if the tails are 25mm and over 3m in length should it be a fused isolator fitted by the dno or by me? will it need to be fused down to 80A for discrimination

Thanks to any advice in advance.

This is how I understand it.

Customer to call supplier to ask for a temporary de-energisation (preferably with you there to explain)
Wait on phone while the supplier "help" line tries to work out what you want.
wait some more
Get transferred to someone else
wait some more
Eventually get an appointment in two weeks time for the supplier (normally subbed to DNO) to come out to pull fuse in am and come back in pm to reinstate (if you get a good person then they may pull fuse and fit isolator and put fuse back).

Pulling the fuse should not cost anything but fitting an isolator is about ÂŁ50, billed to the customer,(or free if you are lucky, or not done by them if you are unlucky).
If you need to fuse down have your switch fuse available (they will not supply a fused isolator) and see if you can get that fitted instead, or fit it and move tails while they wait (if you are lucky).
Discrimination is OK since same fuses in series is pretty pointless but you will then limit your supply and 80-100 does not give much discrimination, DNO might let longer tails be unfused, up to them.

If you need a switch fuse, get that in place with meter tails connected at the switch fuse end.
All the DNO's subby needs to do then is to pop the ends into the meter and reseal.

Mind you, round here the seal fairy has been very busy and has often visited before i get on site. And that saves all the bother of involving the DNO:chinese:

SSE have a great policy. Cut seal pull fuse advise meter reader new seal required.
Though I must admit apparently seals are pretty rare in other DNO's areas, most folks on here will tell you they've never seen one. When they go to a job sometimes they even have the ÂŁ20 isolator fitted already.

Recently Ive been to two jobs where DNO have installed meters with a means of isolating with a simple turn of a flat head screwdriver. But I think these jobs have just been lucky, and obviously a decent guy working for DNO.
I think all DNOs should fit these meters and make everyones life easier.
