Does anyone have any experience of DNOs refusing to install isolation switches between meter and CU?

I have been considering replacing my CU as one of my part P install inspections, and wanting to do things properly, have been considering getting my supplier to fit a DP isolator to enable me to carry out the work legally. Doing some research on the web, I came across this NPower document...

http://www.npower.com/idc/groups/wc...documents/business/b2b_hs_guidelines_elec.pdf

If you look towards the bottom they give a list of DNOs that are prepared to install isolator switches, and unfortunately mine is not one of them.

I have not contacted my supplier to ask, because if they say no, I know what the next step is likely to have to be and I don't want them to have my enquiry on their system and get suspicious ;)

I'm just wondering if I am worrying unnecessarily, has anyone had any dealings of this nature with Southern Electric (My Supplier)?

Cheers

Contact them anyway dial 141 first that keeps your telephone number from them so you cannot be traced. Then just say you are thinking of buying a house but it has no isolator switch whereas your current house does, that way you have given nothing away and you will know how they view it.

Hope that helps

the firm has its own metering opratives that do this kind of thing day in day out so they shoud fit an isolator for around ÂŁ40 to ÂŁ60 quid

i have the contact number for yorkshire as i work in that cost center

Hi JamesBrownLive,

I was charged ÂŁ73 odd for an isolator to be supplied and fitted in a house near Carmarthan. They were very helpful, very quick and did a good job, (I think it was SWALEC) but I have heard that some will only fit the isolator as supplied.
I suppose it depends who and where are again.
Best wishes
Rex

Phone up, ask to speak to a manager and just say that if they won't come and fit an isolator for free you will change your supplier to one of the ones that will!!! - suspect that you won't have a problem but tbh if you do, one of the other suppliers may well be cheaper anyway !

Its my understanding that it is the company responsible for the meter are the ones that come and fit an isolator, not your supplier. Suppliers can be changed but not the company that looks after your meter.
In my case they are one and the same, so it might be an option. However, given that I'm not the fastest payer of their bills  they might be thankful for me to take my business elsewhere :D.

Cheers

I have had 3 isolators fitted over the years at different properties and it has always just been the supplier we have contacted, don't think that it has just been a coincidence that they been the same company :)

I dont know of anyone being prosecuted for cutting seals, there would be no proof who did it anyway so no case to answer. My DNO has no procedure for reporting missing seals and the only time anything is reported is when meters are bypassed etc then it goes to revenue protection.

Though I appreciate it isn't the right thing to do, I have cut thousands of seals over the years and having to arrange to meet unreliable suppliers to fit isolators on every job would just be impossible.
