Just had my building compliant cert through the post and inc is a do you support part p leaflet saying the government has signalled its intention to review the building regulations for England and Wales including part p which covers electrical safety in dwellings. This means part p which provides the only legal protection for householders having electrical work done could be scrapped or the requirements reduced significantly !
Whats your thoughts ?

Well if domestics all goes back to being a free for all, and every builders a sparks again im gonna drive my van into the thames with all my tools in it and join the circus
Just when ive spent the last 5 years ripping out all that ****e work i came up against nearly every day of the week
Then again i cant see the likes of nic/elecsa/eca letting that happen without a damn hard fight!
and the tax man wouldnt let all that work/cash go unaccounted for either would he?

The other way of looking at it is that they may want to allow only 'properly' qualified people to carry out the work and enforce the regulations. There's nothing wrong with Part 'P' in principle, it's the execution and enforcement which is lacking.

I really can't see the restrictions being reduced, more likely a tightening up.

Not really mate, they've just had to prove their competence to some geezer who's about to take their money! If joe blogs came round my house and asked for me to say that he's a competent spark and in return he'd pay me £400, of course I'd say he's competent regardless of whether he is or not! And it's exactly the same for these companies, except that with their approval, you can actually work as a spark legally.

i have a friend who is a kitchen fitter who went for part p with the nic he rewired his house for his assessment, he got a few minor faults but passed(was the most straight forward rewire ever in a 1 bed flat), he only wanted defined scope but the inspector said he will upgrade him to full scope, so then he keeps winding me up saying how easy sparkin is and how we dont deserve half our wages, he called me yesterday asking why both rcds keeps tripping
out on the new cU he just fitted and how to sort it out

so i told him.....................to ******* work it out for himself and hung up

I have been an electrician for 41 years. Got C&G Electricians certificate plus every Regs exam from 13th to 17th edition plus C&G PAT testing and C&G testing, inspection & certification and HND in electrical engineering and you are telling me that I ought to pay £400 a year to work for myself part time, when you are allowing plumbers & builders and god knows who else, do a crash course in electrical regs and call them qualified electricians if they pay £400 a year. Its a bloody joke! They should have banned all other trades who think they are electricians from going anywhere near electrical installations in the same way they banned anyone other than gas fitters from touching gas installations.

i dont think we would get much of a fight to be honest i think the system is a massive hastle for them i think the system will be changed however they will still be involved to grab our money.
