[ElectriciansForums.net] Does anyone know the rating of this paperclip?I think it was from staples if that helps

It was the householders solution to a tripping shower. Connector blocks in the shower ended up melting, board being replaced which I have said is unnecessary as its still perfectly serviceable, but it's a rented property so they want it done.

Well, I'm sure the householder would agree that a new shower and a new CU is probably the better outcome of this deliberate ****wittery compared to, say, their house burning down.

When I was an apprentice (long time ago), the electrician I was working under accidently blew an HRC in a panel at a well known chemist stores in the city of London. As a temporary measure, as he never had a replacement at approx 16:50, he also linked the HRC out with fuse wire. Not sure what the rating was, maybe around 30 Amps or a little larger? The next day I was on my own there whilst he was at the wholesalers, when walking past the panel I noticed the outer panel covering glowing red hot! My immediate reaction was to shut the panel down clear the area and get the manager to call the fire brigade, needless to say it emptied the store. However, It was a very good lesson for me never to do this no matter how awkward the situation. Unless I see it for myself I would never have believed what effect this could have.

Why not keep a selection of hrc fuses on the van.

People keep mcb's so why not hrc if you work on panels a lot.

A lot of bms panels etc use fuses

...I was only thinking about the ingenuity of folk the other day, listing what i have found fitted and SEEN being fitted by some of my industrial and agricultural entrepreneurs.....paper-clips included...but also copper cores(various),re-bar tie wire, bicycle bowden inner, solder, wrapped foil, threaded bar, nails and once,a large straightened terrys nappy pin...marvellous:tounge_smile:

The wire through the HRC reminds me of the old Slydlok re-wireables, I think in the 60 & 100A sizes, which had something that looked like a cartridge inside the bakelite carrier. But when the 'cartridge' was removed by loosening the clamping knob, the end caps released the old wire allowing you to thread new in. This was clamped by the caps when you refitted the 'cartridge' to the carrier. The handy bit was that there was a little spool of fuse wire, enough to rewire it half a dozen times, stored inside the carrier itself.

Re the original pic, that type of fuse is not intended to blow, therefore it does not have a current rating or breaking capacity. They are classified by Scorch Factor, I think that is one is about SF8, meaning that 8 inches of the wall above the board get scorched in the event of a fault.
