would you say this is asking me about protective equipotential bonding and automatic disconection of supply ie joing all exposed extraneous conductive parts within the istallation together

or am I headeing in the wrong direction ?​

insulation, barriers and enclosures etc could they mean basic protection.

Im not 100% sure but I think it could mean the following..........

* Insulation of live parts.

* Barriers or enclosures.

* Obstacles.

* Placing out of reach.


I got that info from 'The schedule of Inspections'.

does anyone know where I might find this info in the bs7671 as I cant seem to find it. I have the on site guide to if its in there again I cant find it

Its all listed in Appendix 5 Enviroment page 318 to 330 of the regs ~IP numbers are on page 323

got muddled up there dyslexically....

The answer is...

IP4X on top of the fitting.

IP2X on sides, front and bottom of the fitting.

The 2X is protection against the 'standard finger' / 12mm.

The 4X is protection against ingress of 1mm objects.

Im fairly positive about the IP2X and IP4X ratings.

Im not accustomed with IPXXD or IPXXB. But as your day has been awful Howard I will just agree with you. Im sure your correct.

the next thing I am trying to look up is the difference between IPX4 and IPXXD but its not proveing to friuitfull at the minute

I know know that IPX4 is for locations where equiptment may be subject to aplashed water. cant see anything for IPXXD though

the additional letters are in BS EN 60529
A: Protected against access with the back of the hand
B: Protected against access with a finger
C: Protected against access with a tool
D: Protected against access with a wire

the IP4X gives protection against solid objects greater than 1mm from entering the enclosure and 1mm wires from contact with live parts inside the enclosure
the IPXXD is just protection against 1mm wires
