Rotten Mob

I did it in back in 2002ish and I was under the impression it was only valid for five years but I can't find anything about this anywhere and it doesn't say so on the certificate.

Do I need to go through it again?

Hi.

No mate, once you gain the 2391 qual it's with you for life.

As long as you update with the regs, the actual method of testing doesn't change.

I believe NAPIT insist on updating every 5 years which to me is complete nonsense but thats up to them.

I've noticed that, but City & Guilds clearly state that no candidate should be entered for a qualification which they already hold.

Absolutely.

My argument is the method of testing will never change i.e connecting of leads to terminals/conductors etc.

With the regs obviously they are updated and have new qualie numbers i.e 80, 81, 82 etc so are a totally different qualification that requires passing, 2391 not so.

Excellent.

I'm in the process of getting the DWP to pay for it since I'm unemployed, so it probably won't hurt anyway. :D

Thanks.

Too right. If someone else is paying....happy days.:)

You're dead right. Surely by familiarising yourself with the current Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations then you know what changes are relevant to Inspection, Testing & Certification of Electrical Installations.

The Electricity at Work Regs 1989 say that the competent person carrying out inspection and testing should be able to prove regular training to prove competency (amongst other things, of course).

My 2391 tutor told us that no one has ever defined the word "regular" into an actual period of time but doing the 1 day update courses when new amendments or editions come out is seen as satisfatory.

As for having the qualification for life...well yes you do, but that does not prove your competent. Anyone who sat the 16th edition is still 16th edition for life but does not prove competency to the current edition, thus they must do the updates, etc. Same goes for Inspection and Testing.

As I said, update with regs and ammendments.

The 2391 course has not changed since I've known it (apart from regs related content).......what do we update to???

Just passed my 2391. Oh and by the way, thanks to this site and all on here who helped. Amberleaf especially for his good.. sorry, great posts. This is an open ended exam as i originally sat this in 2005 passed the practical part but failed the written. I've only had to resit the written part again as city and guilds said thats all i needed to do as there is no time scale on this exam. So this exam should last forever as long as you're up to date with the regs and any changes.

My new start company has joined Napit - myself and my colleague have all the quals so not an issue at this stage.

But seems a requirement from them that you need your regs and the 2391 done every 5 years!!! Does anyone have any idea why that is the case?

I have been a subby at a company for a while that is NIC. The QS has everything, his partner isn't even qualified as a spark! There seems to be no consistancy between the schemes at all.
