Hello electricians forums!

Any advice on my query below will be much appreciated.

I'm living in a 3 bed flat on the bottom floor. I've only recently moved in, and have come across a cabinet labelled "electricity meters" which looks like this picture.

[ElectriciansForums.net] Does this flat set up look right to you?

Now, as I am aware, there is only one functional meter in this cabinet (the mechanical one has tape on it and isn't in use) but to my untrained eye it looks like this meter is servicing all three flats.

If so, this might be a problem, as my supplier thinks its my meter only!

Please could you advise as to whether this looks the case, or anything else I might be able to check. Many thanks,

Tom (London, UK)

the switched fuse in the middle looks to me if it is being fed via the meter, the switchfuses to the left and right look as if they have tails coming straight out of the head/cutouts, if this is the case then maybe their meters are inside their flats?

Hmm, 'Looks OK' is a matter of opinion, but I would say that if the meter is yours, the middle unit is your isolator, and the other two flats have a meter in or around their flat. Looks like only one set of tails go via that meter, the other two go direct.

That's my view on it too, that the other two flats must have their meters elsewhere.

Welcome Tom,

Yep, I agree too.

I have just done some work on two flats.

1 meter was downstairs in an outside cupboard (!) and the other was in the flat via a 60A switch fuse.

Maybe a pic face on would show us better. (not your face btw). :D

Simple way to find out for certain. Turn off the supply to your flat for a couple of hours when you know people are in the others and see if the meter clocks anything up.

It does look like the meter is for the centre switch fuse only.

I would say the meter you see there is the "communal" meter. !
ie it's the supply for everything not on individual meters. Stair lights, smokes, heaters in communal areas.

A better picture may help but I would venture to suggest that thay meter isn't supplying all the flats. Maybe you could turn off the main switch on your fuse board/consumer unit and see what the meter does.

Bit of a weird setup, regs state that there is a maximum distance to where a meter is fitted from the head, distribution companies dont normally have any type of switch between the cable head and the meter. I imagine that if this room is at the bottom the 2 other meters must be some distance away.

bit suspicious that theres meter just sitting there with nothing connected to it, why wouldnt that have been removed?

Maybe somebodys been in and just connected the the tails from the switch straight into the cable head!
