Been to connect up a supply today. It's for a large industrial estate owned by the same people who let alot of the units. Now we do pretty much all the electrical work for these guys, and have done for years. But from time to time the people renting the units will get there own spark in. In one unit theres 4 old fan houses for an old potato store. As it's not used anymore we ripped out all the panels and gear and made it safe. The person renting it decided to have there own 'electrician' in to do a small install job, because our quote was too much. However, this electrician claimed it needed a new submain running in because the old one was to 'fat' and doesnt fit? It's probably a good job he didn't atempt to connect it up, mains is distributed from a busbar chamber, i dread to see what his attempt at that would be! Anyway, got out there today, He's installed a new DB, with no RCD protection, blanks missing from the board and has clipped T+E around what used to be the fan house. I couldn't believe it. Clearly has no idea what he's doing, as there is currently a 35mm 3 core running to the fan house, and he wanted to run in a new cable because it's to big to fit into the new DB he's fitted. The incomer is around 85m, so not excatly a small job. Slightly worrying that work is being carried out like this, looks like these 5 day 'qualified' electricians are starting to work there way into the industrial/commerical area of things.

Heres some pictures, looks like something you'd expect to see in someones shed, not a paid installation!

Yes but the client believes he/she got a good deal!

I've seen higher quality work in a day 1 practical on a college board, is that actually his finished job?

Looks like he needs to come back to put another MCB in for the lights, as there not connected. And it's not been tested yet. So i hope so.

It does remind me of those college booth installs!

In all fairness, you have to admire the set he has made in the horizontal cable
He has obviously got a lot of conduit bending abilities

The fat cable was probably discarded in favour of modern cable, which as any electrician worth is salt knows is pvc twin +e
Those fat cables with all that steel around them, they are so old hat, they are things of the past, and they should be replaced with pvc pvc whenever they are found

Simples :(

quality!!

T&E in stuffing glands!! FFS at least use round cable or why not just build a nice conduit system (steel or plastic) and do a proper job.

i think he just ran both circuits from a 16/20A MCB (i hope) to lights and sockets!!

no RCD as already stipulated. job done!!

will post me conduit jobs soon as nearly done and got a nice SWA DG connect up on sunday !

"just need to finish off this potatoe store!!" lol
