Doody Toody Sets Fish Tank on FIRE!!!!

Myself and Doody were at a house fault finding today, needed to do a visual check on all of the downstairs sockets due to the amount of mistakes made on the first 4-5 (long story). 100% visual done, all the sockets are now with correct polarity and dead test come up trumps, happy days, turn the circuit back on.

3-4 minuets later all I can hear is the customer Mr. Khan and Doody shouting at the top of their voices "Paul, Paul come quick....PAUL, PAUL!!!! WFT is happening? Walked into the living room and into a wall of smoke!!!! Yes it was that bad! Both of them with panicked faces on them lol. Well of course I had an electrical concern/fire on my hands so instead of just standing there, I ran down the hall, out of the front door and into the garage and switched off the Iso. (fastest I have moved in a long time btw).

Walked back into the room and got a barrage of angry questions fired at me from Mr Khan whist the smoke is still rising from the bottom of the fish tanks wooden unit. "What have YOU done?" "How have YOU set fire to my house?" "What have YOU done?"...... (you get the picture)..... The look on Doody Toody's face was priceless! You would not believe the things going through my mind at that moment in time BUT WAIT A MINUET.... I checked that socket, I dead tested this circuit, I know everything was good to energize and all Doody did were to plug back in what I took out and moves the table and sofa back???? But for now lets concentrate on the smoldering fire that is sit under the fish tank!

I pulled 2 big stacks of letters/envelopes out that were still smoldering and smoking more than a 1980's darts player. Got them outside and what did we find under all these envelopes? The water heater for the fish tank. The customer told Doody Toody to plug "the black plug back in" and so he did. Shame it was for the submersible heater sub-merest under all of his household paperwork.

Home owner knew that HE was in the wrong but I must say, Doody check what you are plugging in next time mate. Not your fault bud, it was an accident created by the customer. I found it f***ing hilarious once we found out the cause, notice how the customer made a quick exit

Out of all the houses, shops, mini markets that I work on for Mr Khan, you have to set fire to his home!!! I wont loose any sleep over it. He will have to get his curtains dry cleaned though.

priceless!.

Just had the home owners son on the phone (I deal with him the most) and laughed about his dad telling Doody to plug in the heater. Extremely grateful that the fire did not spread and for sorting out everything. My reply was "sh*t happens, it is how you deal with it that counts."

Everything is well in the world again, no people or property were injured or damaged. A good little learning point for us all, please check what you are plugging back in even if the customer tells you to do it.

Disclaimer:- No fish were injured in the production of this thread, although Doody Toody and the customer may need to wash their underpants twice

Doody, please change your avatar picture to this just for a laugh

Also wired a socket wrong ... Wasn't my best of days... Or week for that matter; turned my bosses testing probe into a welder, wired a socket wrong and nearly burnt down a house...

Customer was complaining about a sizzling noise when he turned on the lights ... Also when he plugged in the fishtank lights the living room lights came on too  he had a switched fuse spur being fed from the sockets controlling the lights as well as the light switch

This isn't my work btw... I managed to get lives and neutrals together... just the wrong terminals.
Don't understand why people like to twist earths together? seen this alot recently

The man that hasn’t made a mistake has made nothing.

You’ll not make the same mistakes again, will you?

Believe me I’ve dropped some real bo!!ox over the years.
£250,000 of damage in 15 seconds, all because I hadn’t paid attention to detail. Crunch, Bang, Oh ****!
I was in R&D then. Wreck and destroy.

This is what mentoring is all about. Firstly it's hopefully to prevent major damage or injury but equally important is it's the mentors job to smooth things over with the customer or property owner when you've learned an invaluable lesson the hard way. Keep frying the fish, it's all invaluable lessons and experience.

^^^ well said Marvo ^^^

Once all the information was gathered, the end result was = Not Doody Toody's fault. (that is for the forum record btw)

Doody acted upon the clients instructions of putting a plug back into a socket.

The client was wrong to instruct this action due to the lack of his own knowledge of what the plug was feeding.

Doody did question the clients instruction but he was told to plug it in anyway.

Once smoke was detected, the head spark/QS was called for and power switched off to the building.

The smoldering papers were safely taken away from any other flammable materials within the house and the situation contained to a local area.

The source of the fire was quickly identified and removed from any other form of incident.

All of the above happened within 60 seconds. To be able to handle any situation needs a calm head and a sequence of actions to prevent danger to people, property and livestock whilst the sh*t hitting the fan. One of the many strengths that Mentors have. It takes time and experiences to develop, you can not learn this on a course (kind of thing).

Only thing I will say about Doody is that he could have looked at what the plug was feeding and acted faster than what he did. At your age and experience, I would have acted the same mate. No blame what so ever and you were professional and conducted yourself in the correct way when the questions were being fired at you. Perfect response Doody, you held up against something like this very very well.

I knew the first time we worked together that there was something good about you. Your going to become a great Electrician in time. Let these times be a lesson for you. Just promise me 1 thing,,,, become better than me
