Hello,

Got a job in a school.

All that needs doing is a push button switch wiring in so the door latch that unlocks the door when pressed. There is already a swipe card system in place that unlocks the door.

Can anybody point me in the correct direction for materials??

Also ive never done too much door control before, would this be a complicated job??

Thank you.

Dead easy job just get a kit from wholesaler good ones have them on shelf already full instructions with them best advise keep all gear same make what is already installed as call outs are alot easier to deal with and the card reader will work

Heh, something I should be able to answer, since I can build them for scratch :p

Easy enough, but you need to know what your dealing with. What type of lock is it? There are basically two types. Break to open and close to open. If its magnetic you want to wire a switch into the feed to break the connection. If its for mortice type locks it can be the same as the magnetic or need a supply to open it.

I will bet it needs broken to open because it will be fail safe for fire safety with another two or so locks for locking up at night/holidays.

But wait.

You said there is a system in place and it may be as simple as wiring the switch into terminals on the console, but you will still need to know what type of switch and it should tell you on the PCB. Some have two sets of seperate terminals for the two options.

Sorry for the lack of technical terms but Im self taught and even if I do know how to program the microprocessors for them I might not know all the big words.

So push to make, push to break or whatever option/s the PCB gives you.

this type of lock should also be connected to the fire alarm panel so that in the event of a fire the door lock automatically opens and will not lock until the fire alarm panel is reset simple to do depending where the panel is

The door should have an emergency break glass exit button ( same as a fire alarm call point but coloured green ) all you need to do is wire a push button in parallel or series with this depending on whether the system circuit is make to open or break to open the lock

The existing swipe card unit will already have the terminals for exit, this will allow a preset time to exit atherwise you will have to kee the exit button pressed. As stated above System will need green break glass and if required by fire officer released on fire. If you state the make of swipe card used hopefully can I can pm manual and terminals used.

If its an existing system it should already have the fire safety incorporated. This job should be as simple as just adding the switch by one of the three methods. You could add another ten door releases and not affect it or need anything more than the switches. Your not messing with the mechanism itself, just adding another door control.

Probably worth checking that it is connected to the fire alarm before going any further. It might be it isnt connected, but if its existing it should be in my opinion. If it isnt already connected then you have a more pressing problem and you need to address that before the switch or at the same time, but IMO priorities will have changed, its a school for ffs. I just wouldnt ask the fire inspector "What if this exit ONLY opens by swipe and remains locked during a fire?"

Basically I dont think the fire safety should be an issue at all if its already a working mechanism or it was installed inadequately to begin with and this job has went from an upgrade to a repair.
