Been to look at a job yesterday, about a weeks work. But one of the jobs is wiring a door interlock system, alot of the doors already have them but they want an additional door protected.
Now they want it with a key pad which when the correct code is entered the magnet on the door releases it, at the moment its just released with a button press.
Now i have never done a door interlock system before so can anyone shed any light on how easy/difficult it is or have any links so i can read up on it??

Thanks.

Ok well basically, this door already has a push button entry system on it, so what accessories will i need?? Will it be just the keypad or will i need a power supply too??

Thanks.

You can usually power these off the esiting power supply.
You may need to replace the existing cable to the push button, to provide extra cores for the power to the key pad.
To be honest there are a couple of ways the existing push button can be wired.
It may be that it is in series with the Mag lock, and just interupts the supply, or it may be that the push button operates a relay at the control panel.
If you do install a key pad, you may also have to install an emergency break glass, or ensure that the system is linked to the fire alarm.

Ok well the existing push button is linked to the fire alarm so should there already be enough cores on the cable?? And apart from the power supply will extra cores be needed??

Thanks

I would not have thought that the push button itself is linked to the fire alarm.
These are normally just switches, that as I said earlier either interupt the supply to the Mag lock, or operate a relay.
The relay being timed so the supply to the Mag lock is interupted for however long it is set too. This allows the push button to be pressed and released before opening the door.
Such would only require one pair of cores.
Most cables have 6, 8, 10 or even 12 cores, which are often doubled, trippled or quadroupled up for the Mag locks, especially if the power supply is very distant to the lock.
Sometimes a pair can be disconnected from those doubled up for the Mag lock and they can then be used for something else.

Key pads them selves come in two types.
One type connects back to the control panel and the code can be changed on the central sytem.
The other type is stand alone and the code is set up at the unit, these are often accessed by the use of a lock and key.
You would probablly want the second type, as they apart from power will just replace the push button.
