Down lights in drop ceiling.

Hi anyone got experience of putting downlights in a drop ceiling? eg. do they need to be fire rated.

theyy don't need to be fire rated as you're not breaching a fire barrier. if the false ceiling is plastic, i'd use LEDs, and don't let any numpty fill the void with insulation.

covered that with the fire insulation, I am more concerned about the gu10 light heat going up onto the original ceiling? its not plastic its just the standard ceiling tiles.

Down lights in a suspended ceilings are ok, fitted loads of them. You will want some ply or board on top of the ceiling tile to give strength and make sure that cables are clipped, tied off of ceiling. As for fire rated, if original ceiling is intact and dont think they're needed.

hi mate just out of interest installing 4 downlights to false ceiling in a special location so it needs certifying because your extending in a special location how much would you charge?

Asking this because its a one off job for a mate tats a builder.

Depends on alot of things, if its a one off for a mate and you may get further work from it do it cheap. Get him to pay for materials and charge a days money, I dont know, I cant get my own prices right let alone someone elses. It will need certifying whether in a special location or not.

yep its hard explaining to people that things need certifying ok take out the mates rates what would be your ball park figure? I am from liverpool so dont really know the pricing in essex

Thats another thing everything installed has to be protected by an rcd, now if its an old fuse board suppose you can put lighting circuit going through rcd is there another you can get round it like for ring mains you can put a rcd protected plug socket in.

Fella, its only 4 down lights , have you seen the job?, whats above the ceiling to connect to? Klik roses? whats already on the circuit? what do you want me to do, guess? I dont know £100 plus expenses, materials, be bold make it up.
