Hi folks, If you're planning to install downlights in an existing ceiling with no possibility of access from above, and no possibilty of taking the ceiling down, how do you get the downlight fire hoods in position? Anyone got any links to some cool products or solutions to make a cinch of this job? Cheers,

Are the hoods required, they're not normally if it's a house and the downlighters are being installed on the ground floor? If it's a flat then fair enough as it's needed for fire barrier preservation. :)

If he can't gain access from above it may be a flat? If he gets fire rated lights, uses heat flex and don't forget to take away 100mm of insulation from the light.

Be careful....... I have seen fire rated downlights surrounded by loosefill insulation ....... the ceiling all around it turned brown and the twin and earth feeding it was melted about six inches back !!!!!!
It was cookin itself.

The prices I've seen for downlights that require fire hoods are almost identicle in price of the fire rated downlighters? Stuff the firehoods, just fit one simple unit and have done with it :thumbsup

Aurora have a new range called sola that are fire rated are available in 240 or 12 v and are designed to be covered in glass wool insulation and are gauranteed to not cause a fire.the trannies for the 12v ones are red and also come with the same gaurantee.

Also noticed in the new electricfix brochure that Halolite have brought out identical fittings.

problem is they are not cheap. bog standard white ones are about £18 + vat.
I can get aurora ones for a bit cheaper through neweys .

Yep I've seen it on a new build that's why I said use heat flex and as per the manufactures recommendation remove 100mm of insulation away from the fitting. Customers don't like seeing you pull out all that insulation but its better than starting an house fire and ending up in court.

As for the cost of fire rated spots I get mine from national lighting, GU10 around £8 each 240V or 12V. LEDs more expensive at just above £20 each.
