Downlight problem

Was called to a job last week were 3 downlights in a walk in wardrobe kept dimming out (eventually going off, no dimmer involved) then returning back on after 5mins.

Pulled them down to find all 3 were fed from one transformer. Rewired all 3 and installed a transformer for each fitting. All worked fine.

Just had a call to say that two of the lamps are doing the same thing again but one is now fine. I'm presuming the transformers thermal trips maybe operating? Maybe getting to hot?

Sounds very much like it, what is the ventilation like around the transformers?
If you are pushing them up into insulation and if they are the nice small transformers, that are so easy to get into the holes, then they are more susceptible to overheating.
I assume they are the right rating of transformer!

Could be a high resistance lamp pin/holder connection on those horrendous MR16 holders.
You should have converted them all to GU10, end of problems!

Did you check the lampholders? The MR16 wires get corroded by the heat over time and can have that effect. It's usually visible where the wires go into the lampholder ceramic (or plastic)

Lob them out and fit GU10 with LED lamps or the JCC LED6 combined fittings. Transformers are so yesteryear

Agree gu10 LEDs won't fit anything else now
