Hi guys.first of all i want to thank you for the great job u are doing.
I have a client who just loves dowlights everywhere in the house.
I have to put downlights in An kitchen extension celing witch is isnsulated with kingspan(there are no rooms on top of extension)
What type of lights will be best? as i understood there are some wich don t get very hot and would be best to use.
Now i know should have 10 lighting points per circuit.what do i do when it comes to downlights as i have 24 downlights downstairs?
And last , where to install fire rated as this is a 3 bedroom house and i have downlights everywhere.
Thanx

agree. use LEDs, virtually no heat, cheap to run, and 24 x 5watt Leds = 120watt = 0.5A so no load current problems.

What about fire rated ones.where would u install them in a 3 bedroom house where u have downlights all over the place ?
Thanx

Just as well install fire rated as a matter of course
Even if they are not breaching a fire compartment, as in most houses, they also provide the acoustic properties, that standard downlights dont have The acoustic levels also come under the building regs

They are no longer much difference price wise, so I fit only fire rated, irrespective of the location

Dont get confused with the down lighters guys , the fire rated rating is to replace the fire rating of the ceiling where you cut the hole not the rating of the back of the down lighter , me i would install PFL down lighters produce less heat and provide more light than a LED down lighter

fire rated where living accomadation above, otherwise not needed,100mm gap in celertex to allow for light fitting.tell the builder!

Ive seen building control refuse to sign off, issue a completion certificate on refurbished dwellings what ever argument people chose to put forward not to fit fire rated down lighters.

I thought the regs are saying that if it s part of the same dweling u dont have to install fire rated.only if there is a room wich is part of another flat.please correct me if i am wrong

You don't have to fit fire rated fittings in this situation, but there is still the kingspan issue which you have no choice but to cut a section of the kingspan out before plasterboard goes up.

But don't do this before building inspector checks insulation otherwise he could make builder sort it.

It seems to be one of them grey areas, building regs demand insulation and customer demands spots, the only proper way of satisfying all the regs would be for the builder to lower the ceing an extra 100mm or so, but that ain't gonnna happen so we have to bend the rules a bit!

Fire regs to my knowlege require 60min fire protection between floors even if it is in the same house. Horizontal fire protection is required between zones ie if you had 3 flats on a floor or a multiple occupancy residence fire protection would be required between each flat/apartment and on the communal fire route. Other requirements would also be needed fire doors etc.

Personally I would always fit fire rated downlighters. However it could be argued in a house ground floor would require fire rated. 1st floor would not as no habitable space above. Please correct me if im wrong.

if both floors within same dwelling then fire rated not required as compartmentation not required, except where travel distance from furthest point of furthest room to final exit or compartmented escape route excedes (think 28m) ish someone please tell me excatly the travel distance, it was in the fuzzy would rather not remember past ! we had to reverse a flight of stairs to comly with this one even after B I had passed plans
