hi
just about to fit 4 downlights ina bathroom.Have read regs and it says i need 30ma r.c.d. Does that mean i have to run bathroom lights from c.u and not existing ceiling rose. Does it mean bathroom has its own independant circuit or do all upstairs lights go on r.c.d.
Any info please.

all depends on the CU. depending on whether it's an old rewireable with no RCD anywhere, or a split board with some circuits RCD protected, options are different. also, what else is in the bathroom, shower? fan? too many variables to make an educated response.

Hi steveberry, I see from your previous posts you are training but not in electrical installation. Regardless, some things should of been drummed into you by now.

1. All circuits in a bathroom must be protected by a 30mA RCD (if you're altering the bathroom wiring then the bathroom part of the circuit you are changing must be rcd protected), how you do that is up to you but it would be normal to protect the whole circuit with an RCBO.
2. You should test the circuit you are altering to make sure it is safe, also the earth bonding etc. All these results should be noted down on a minor works cirtificate and the original given to the client, copy in your files.
3. The work should then be notified to building control, usually by you being a member of NAPPIT, ELECSA or NICEIC. Not to notify is against the law.

Post a link to the type of downlighters you are using and we may be able to help further. Also, what is above this bathroom?

Now I don't have the BGB to hand, so shoot me down if you like. But I though RCD protection was only needed if there wasn't supplementary bonding in place in a bathroom?

Obviously mechanical protection etc need to comply too.
