Has anyone come across 1G or 2G blanking plates and surface-mount pattresses in white plastic which are easier to drill than the rather brittle plastic which seems to be the norm?

patresses , yes. you need to get the high impact ones with the 20mm knock-outs. they will drill without shattering.

Thanks to all for brilliant help. Once I worked out (from the Marshall Tufflex specification) that it was PVC that I was looking for, it made the search much easier - and I found Toolstation stocking 1G and 2G PVC blanking plates at decent prices (and free delivery on relatively small orders).

some companies refer to "PVC" as any plastic drilling a blank plate is a matter of "cawing cannie" and taking time ,sharp drill , holesaw I tend to prefer using a taper step drill for cutting them also watch where the ribs on rear are

Those blanking plates are total cack mate. No more than a thin piece of PVC. When screwed back they ends bow away from the backbox.
