summer

I'm going to America in September and I brought a load of DVD's to take with me, I only just realized about the region thing. Is it okay for me to take my dvd player with me? Will it work in America? And if not, if I buy a Multi Regional DVD player, will that work out there? Please help!

Your DVD player will play them if you take it to the US but their supply voltage is generally 110v. Some electronic appliances have a small voltage selector switch on the back where you can set them for 100v or 230v. If it doesn't have this option then you'd need to run it in the US using a 110v-230v step up transformer.

If you're going to buy a multi region DVD then wait till you get there before you purchase it, that way you'll get one that works on the correct voltage.

If you've got any comments on the DVD region code and how such copyright measures help get the artists paid please feel free to join the debate in this thread.

wrong marvo the yanks do have 230 i belive.

a 60 hertz 110 step up to 230/240 50hertz, would be a good idea

For the sake of the price just get a cheap DVD player over their its cheaper a than trying to adapt yours .. PS they have thousands of channels over there Im sure you'll not get board!

Usually 120-0-120 so you can get 240V.
But most electronic gizmos these days have switched-mode power supplies that are rated to accept 100-240V and 50/60Hz.

Step up as in a transformer? And 60-50Hz? No can do.
Anyway, changing the frequency is complex, expensive and usually unnecessary.

Mrs B is American (but not a Yank!) so we have regular exchanges across that pond. Kit works fine in both places.
Lap tops, phone chargers, Kindles......

phones and kindles are different though because they are usually charged by 5v+ dc.

the chargers yes

Between us, Mrs B and I, we have maybe half a dozen phones.
No. Don't ask.
My Nokia can take any input to the charger, the BlackBerry manages on the same charger as do our three Kindles (100-240). And the horrid iPhone.
Most can be charged slowly from a usb port on any of our computers - yes, we have a bunch of those too.

We will go to the USA in November, each with a laptop, the Kindles, and probably just a couple of phones. And a few adaptors to plug into the 120V source.

Sorted.

same as the wall chargers the only difference is they put 2v across a couple of the pins on the usb to tell it that it is an ac source

(i learnt about this when putting a minty boost together)
