think i know the answer but just to confirm new regs state 10mm bonding from gas meter and water but is there a maximum distance before size needs to be increased

not that i know of, i wouldn't worry about it unless it was a seious distance.

Every earthing conductor shall comply with section 543
The earthing conductor shall be calculated 543.1.3 or selected 543.1.4

If the adiabatic equation is used,the fault current is determined by the Zs
The Zs is partly determined by the cable resistance
The resistance is partly determined by the length

So if it is calculated then the size is chosen by the result ( where length of cable has been taken into account)

If it is selected then its done for you
