Earth query

Hi again,

Best advice please went to a house the other day and the earthing arrangement was a TN-S as the MET had a serviceable braided cable without any insulation on it connected to the sheath of the incoming supply.But in addition the service cutout block also had a 10mm earth cable going to the MET so a TN-C-S system (PME)

Why ,should I contact the owners electricity company ?

Verify supply, - test Ze at TN-S and then TN-C-S may be TN-S connection has very high impeadance so MET might have converted supply to TN-C-S but you need them to confirm

Basically as Bugsy has said.....measure Ze on both, every chance the Ze on TN-S is too high so it got converted to TN-C-S. Worth contacting DNO just to make sure it's not a DIY conversion.

Ok results below and both give me a good earth

TN-C-S is 0.12 ohms and TN-S gave me a reading of 0.16 ohms.Each one was tested independantly so no parallel paths.

What to do now ?

The owner did comment that next door had no earth at all !

Not than unusual as only the other day looked at a old bungalow with no earth and all in old rubber wiring.Even had bakerlite light switches ,real period stuff but a bit dangerous with perishing wires everywhere.

i turned up to do some bathroom spot today, went to the board main earth tucked behind the yeb board. rang yeb
'yeah we will make pme £154.28'
made me realise why it got shoved behind the yeb board

As the PME reading is fine....I would now contact DNO to verify that it is an actual PME system with correctly earthed points along the way, and not a diy connection.

Doing quotes for another property now with no earth at all and I had to phone EDF energy today.Been trying to get through to the maintenance department for about a week now,no telephone queing system in place.I just tried all extensions until i got a option to speak to someone.They did say that they would not nomally charge outside of London.However someone has to come out to see the property to see whether the supply cable would be suitable for PME.Could be up to 10 days waiting for someone to come out.

If there is no earth present, you should really be installing a rod, even if it is temporary.

I ring YEDL quite often, and have no trouble. Call 0800 375 675. You will need customers MPAN number. This is their emergency number. Whenever i have called with an earthing problem they have been on site fairly quickly and never made a charge yet.

i used to work for Yorkshire Electricity (now NPOWER) as a boring advisor..!! the amount of crap i had to deal with was unbelievable! lol

YEDL & NEDL is now CE Electric but 9/10 vans still got NEDL / YEDL livery .... only seen a few with the CE Electric Design...!

I live in Leeds and find that most properties don't have a Main Earth Terminal. If you request one they have started charging £151 for the privilage. They also try their hardest to convince the customer to ask the sparky to sink a rod .They also give a waiting time of upto 12 weeks (very slack but i suppose they are up the wall with all of us requesting a PME).
I always advise customers to contact them as soon as we have quoted (whether we get job or not)so as to speed up process.
Been advised though (by YEDL guy) that if there is any sort of main earth present, that has been installed incorrectly/illegally ,(previously before works begin) ,then they would usually put it right at no cost.
Not too sure if this is the case. What's the situation in other parts of blighty?

DNO's have no resposibility to supply you with an earthing system (free of charge).....they do however have a responsibility to maintain it if they have provided one.
