DAVE WILLIAMSON

Heres a good one ,can anyone out there inform me that if i take down an existing light fitting to replace it with an identical one and the wiring is good but the old colours (red, black, green) do i have to remove the earth sleeve and put on the yellow and green sleeve to comply with the 17th edition or is it perfectly acceptable to leave the existing sleeving. Also when doing an in line joint onto a junction box to spur off you do not cut the existing cable you strip it ,so the earth will have no sleeve as you cannot put it on (you would have to cut it to do so) is this acceptable . Just asking because where i work they say not ,but i think its ok ,so does anyone know..cheers..

If you work on a fitting then why not improve the compliance, fitting a piece of green/ yellow instead of green is neither here nor there ,so while its disconnected just do it
An install that was wired originally using green sleeving was compliant at the time of install and the regs are not retrospective,so although it does not comply with current there is nothing wrong with it in any way

Making a junction in a cable
If the cable is not cut the original circuit will not be made worse agreed, but the addition will be clamped with a screw( or soldered if you wanted real quality)
If you accept the joint you make is adequate, then whether that joint is seperate cores or one continuous, with one seperate it makes no difference safety wise it should be a secure joint whichever method
Cut the cable install the sleeving and be done with it
Remembering that the joint should be accessable for inspection if its not soldered or crimped
