Chector

I would value peoples opinions the earthing arrangement I cam across yesterday. Water and Gas main protective bonding conductors were not installed at the consumer unit, but were coned to the main earthing terminal. The MET was connected to the distributors earth and one conductor ran from the MET to the consumer unit. The resistance from the consumer unit to the gas and water were fine at 0.01 Ohms. But shouldn't the conductors be wired into the consumer unit? They all need changing anyway as they were all 6mm.

When you say earthing arrangement are you referring to the Bonding?

I cant see anything wrong with the Main Bonding connected to the MET Chector.

Plus the 6mm² for bonding :

"could be deemed adequate if the bonding conductors have been in place for a significant time and show no signs of thermal damage".

So, if you are just doing a small job then leave well alone if it meets the above criteria :smile5:, if you are doing a rewire then it would be a good idea to pop the 10mm² in whilst floorboards/ceilings are up.

Thanks, changing the consumer unit. Bonding conductors have been in place for sometime with no sign of damage. I ran out of time to do anything about the situation as I discovered the earth had been cut out of the circuit in the garage which ran as an un-fused spur supplying both lights and sockets. With the time I had I decided to re-wire the garage.
