Hi all,
Got my part p assessment coming up with elecsa so decided to change an early 80s db in a 2 bed bungalow. It has a pme arrangement and a 10mm main earth and 25mm tails. Forgive my ignorance but will I be required to upgrade the earth to 16mm and if so can I connect it to a seperate met near the intake and connect the exisiting earth there until the DNO change the conductor from the cut out?

I would take 16 mm into side of cut out. Also upgrade main protective bonds to 10 mm2 if csa is currently smaller.
Jst a query myself, do you have to notify building control about replacing a dist board as you cant currently self certify?and would the area engineer want evidence of this on assessing you?

you should be able to access the earth terminal on the cut out without involving DNO. with elecsa, they will most likely allow you to notify BC after passing assessment.

You should have your OSG and it will all be in there with regards tail size and earthing arrangements.

He will be asking you all sorts of questions.

Make sure you either know the answer, or are able to find it in the regs easily.

Come on mate, if you are preparing for an assessment you must have your regs and OSG to hand, its all in there, in plain view.

You are going to get a few more in depth questions during the assessment than size of earthing conductor. This is basic stuff which you should know if going for any scheme.

I'd get catching up on your revision if I were you

I tend to agree with Geoff, are you really sure they are 25mm tails? unusual if you have a 10mm earth... i would put money on the tails being 16mm...

However, now i'll open up the debate. How difficult would it be to replace the main earthing? is it a short run? or is it run through brickwork etc and a large job to upgrade? If it's a 2 bed 1970's bungalow, one single socket in each bedroom and few in the living room and just one light in each room, there is no problem at all with noting on the cert that the 10mm shows no signs of ageing or heat damage and is adequate for the installation as it stands. You can even cover yourself by stating that any further addition to the installation may require an upgrade to the main earthing of the installation....

Tin hat and bayonette fixed......
