does earthing provide basic or fault protection?

Now i know it provides fault protection as the earth is need to trip the circut breakers but im thinking is this a trick question and could it be both? :rolleyes2:

any help is muchly appreciated

thanks

look up basic protection in the bible. ( BS7671 ) that will give you the answer. wish this forum was around when i had homework, but then, the nearest thing to a computer took up as much room as a row of terraced houses, and it worked on valves.
