Hi folks,

New member to the forum and newly qualified part p and 17the edition electrician.

Could do with a little advice regarding the removal of an economy 7 meter. Is this classed as minor works?

thanks in advance

Dan

Hi telectrix,

firstly thank ink you for your swift reply. My client has contacted them and said its down to them to sort as it's been fitted in the property and not used for over 15 years. Would this be a minor works certificate job?

thanks again

dan

As telectrix says. The meter is the property of the company to who the customer pays their bills. It is connected to the DNO's network and is sealed. A meter can only be removed by breaking the seals and removing the main supply fuse.

Carrying out this work is not the responsibility of a domestic electrician. It is
1. Not permitted and
2. Dangerous unless you have beeen specifically trained

You can only alter/move/disconnect the consumer unit and wiring associated with it.

Your customer needs to write to whoever the supplier is and request the removal of the meter (and probably stop the off-peak tariff if they are still signed up for it).

H Taylor,

my my customer has contacted the supplier to arrange an isolator to be fitted between his new meter and consumer unit. As I said previously the economy 7 is no longer in use and hasn't been for many years. The supplier said it needs to be taken out by a competent electrician. I just need to know if it's minor works

Why don't they remove the E7 meter when they install the isolator? Like the others have said you shouldn't be removing it so why would you issue a minor works for something you shouldn't be touching.

Any way when they install the isolator it will be after the meter not before it so pretty pointless having it installed if it's just for the purpose of you getting rid of the E7 meter.

Then your customer has been misinformed, electricity meters are the property of the electricity supplier and it is dangerous and illegal for anyone other than them to remove it.

You can not do this yourself, it is the responsibility of the supplier, if you ring up they will remove it, if unsure which supplier it is ring up who you think it is, they will look on ecos that will tell them.

It's funny, when I moved in to my house it had a e7 Meter but gas ch, wife rang the electricity supplier and ask to get it changed, they said yes but would cost you ÂŁ150 to do that so we left it for 5 mouths then I rang up and ask the same question and was told that they would be around the next day and change it, will give us a refund on our bill and one month free Electric, I left the lights on 24/7
