My company has asked me to obtain an ECS Card. I have now done the required ECS H&S Course and have downloaded the papers to complete for the ECS Card application. I am not JIB Graded and have never had an ECS Card before. I am a bit confused as to how this works. I have been working as a Maintenance Electrician for the last 8 years, prior to that i have worked in various technical roles in the electrical industry going back to the early eighties. I didnt do a formal Electrical Installation apprentiship however I have plenty of practical electrical install knowledge & experience. My technical qualifications are BTEC ONC Electrical Engineering, C&G 17th Edition, C&G Inspection & Test. Do I have to apply for a particular type of card i.e Maintenance Electrician to keep it all in accordance with my present job or do I just fill in the form & send copies of my certs so they then can make their own decision of what to grant me

its a bit hit and miss, just send copies of every qual you have, they decide what card you get..

Thanks for your replies. The card application forms are not at all clear on this & seem to make everything unnecessarily complicated. I suppose I will just have to fill them in send them off with my certs & see what comes back

Sounds like maintenance electrician would simplify matters for you. You mentioned you haven't got a formal apprenticeship but you can get your employer to back you up if you have any problems. i.e read the application and I think this should become clear.
