I have just passed my health and safety assesment and i am now going to apply for a ecs card.
I have got NVQ 1 and 2 and 3 but not the full NVQ 3 so before i apply it i want to know if i am able to get the card without the full NVQ 3 and if i can what type of card would it be?

Be warned,
The JIB are a law unto themselves,

They may see that yopu have qualifications but unless you have had practical exams (AM1, AM2 or 2391) they may still grade you a adult trainee.

I know electricans who served there time with NON-JIB companies and they insisted that they needed to go back to colledge.

good luck

btw I personally hold the in extremely high regard,
almost as high as a........

(scratches head)

erm

well lets see

If I were you, I would wait until I had the certificates through, and then apply for the highest grading you think they will award you (The JIB will want to see copies of all certificates so you have to wait anyway). They will not make you a JIB Approved electrician if you don't have the qualifications but they are people and error can happen, in addition when you get the grading through they should tell you what will be required for the next grading.

As far as I'm aware you you to be employed by a one man band rewiring Mrs Migins pie shop, (or even her house) you do not need the ECS card. One company on the (CCTV side ) I subcontract to, I'm the only one with a ECS card as a result if they carry-out work on a local hospital where they have a maintenance contract and thye cablerun goes through the building site, I'm the only one who can go in there as it is under Balfour Beaty control.

I would recomend that you do go for the JIB grading and get the ECS card as it may mean you are not limitimng yourself to what jobs you may get.

On paper if a contractor had 2 people in from of them and one has a ECS card and one hasn't they will alway go for the one who they can use on more sites.

okay thanks for the adivce..oh and one more thing after nvq 3 are you qualified enough to sign of the work and stuff or do you need more qualifications like testing and inspection certificate

I'm not taking the P**s here,

but an electrician is qualified to sign off a job,
or is had always been the case from when I was an apprentice.
some companies such as Skanska, Bovis etc insist that testing is carried out by an electrican by electrician who hold the 2391, but as far as I know it is not a requirement.

Just as it is not a requirement for an electrcican to carry out electrical work. It is a requirement for a company toto be Part "P" registared to carryout domestic work but those actually doing the work do not require the quallifications.

alas now we are going into the relms of containment engineers (people with no quallifations who install conduit, trunking tray etc. and then someone else carrys out the wiring. then someone else terminates the installation, and then a tester comes along to pick up the pieces)

As far as I aware the NICEIC do not insist that a company has a quallified tester just a competent tester
