Hi All,

Just got a couple of questions I hope you can help me with...

1.
What's the difference between the ECS and JIB cards?

2. I think that you qualify for an ECS card with a time served apprenticeship or C&G 2360 PT 1&2 (or equivalent), an NVQ3, and the C&G2382 17th Ed, and the H&S qualification.

I've read in the small print that you won't need to do the H&S course the first time you apply for the ECS card, as long as you've completed your NVQ3 within 3 years, that'll save ÂŁ40 if that's right! :)

Also there's no mention of the AM2 in the qualifications required for the ECS card, does that mean that you can be a fully qualified electrician without doing the AM2?

3. Do I need to complete the AM2 to get an NVQ3?

I thought that the NVQ3 was an on-site diary that you filled in, and you got an on-site sparky to sign it off to say you work was up to standard.

Then I saw this website :- AM2 Electrical Course

Where it says "Satisfactory achievement of the AM2 Test will provide evidence for the Practical Performance Assessment(PPA) requirements specified in the Level 3 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)."

Has anyone on here completed their NVQ3, and did they need to do the AM2??

Cheers! :)

Cymro bear with me and I will try to explain. There are three components to a traditional apprenticeship ( at least there was ) The C&G theoretical papers which are studied at college, the NVQ workbooks which are completed by you and signed by your supervisor, these are supposed to describe the work you do to ensure that you are competent. Both these run together. At the end of the 3rd 4th year whatever the AM2 is the final trade test and is taken at a college with facilities so you can show an inspector/Tutor that you really can do the job. When you have done the AM2 you would be awarded an NVQ 3 under the scheme I'm describing. Armed with all of this you can apply for an ECS card which is now the same thing as a JIB card ( it shows your JIB grade). The ECS card is affiliated to the CSCS card. You need one of those to work on a Construction site and it basically identifies you as having taken the relevant H&S test.

ive had my 2360 pt 1&2 for 11 yrs. Do i need to do AM1 or NVQ 3???

As you have already achieved your 2360 parts 1 & 2 and should be able to demonstrate that you have had an apprenticeship (or equivalent training), the JIB will grade you as an Electrician ONLY of you also complete your NVQ 2356 Level 3 (see JIB Link) . You DO NOT need your AM2 as you are already a a practicing operative with relevant experience etc.

If you want to gain approved status with the JIB you will also need to achieve your City & Guilds 2391-10 (Inspection & Testing) as well as your City & Guilds NVQ 2356.

The NVQ 2356 in Electrical Installation has eight units (301 to 308) and you will need to collect evidence of competency for EACH unit on THREE SEPARATE occasions. The evidence should be video/photo, witness statements etc etc.

Some training providers such as XS Training and Delta offer this NVQ online at a reasonable cost, however, you need to make sure that you can cover all the criteria for this NVQ in the work that you carry out on a day to day basis.

Full details of the NVQ and occupational standards can be found within this pdf . Remember to refer to units 301 - 308 for Electrical Installation route.

Note that with the new NVQ 2357, you will need to do the AM2 regardless of experience/qualifications etc, so it is much better to do the exisiting NVQ 2356.

Hi Sparksflying,

Yeah you're totally right, just looked it up now and for the NVQ3 2356 it says about the AM2, http://www.cityandguilds.com/documents/ind_construction_electrical/2356-FAQ.pdf :-

"Is the AM2 Mandatory?

New Entrants must achieve parts b-d of the AM2 in order to meet the PPA requirements of the Level 3 NVQ

Existing workers may provide evidence from the last 24 months if it is assessed as meeting the requirements.

AM2 is mandatory part of the SummitSkills Electrotechnical Advanced Apprenticeship Programme."

Note that the last registration date for the NVQ3 2356 is the 31/7/12.

The AM2 is mandatory for the NVQ3 2357 http://www.cityandguilds.com/docume...ical/2357-L3dips-Electrotechnical-QHB-v05.pdf

On page 9 Unit 2357 - 399 Electrotechnical Occupational Competence (AM2) - Mandatory.

Hi Cymro,

The AM2 is only mandatory with the NVQ 2356 if you are a "New Entrant" (Apprentice/Trainee etc).

As you have rightly pointed out, the 2357 makes the AM2 mandatory regardless of experience so the NVQ 2356 is the best route.
