Just added new circuit to an existing installation - garage supply.

On EIC, particulars of installation at the origin, do I supply the information from the origin of the installion or the new consumer unit in the garage....things such as main switch or circuit breaker section - confused please help

Also on the schedule of test results under (designation of consumer units) would I put both consumer units designations?

all your info on MCBs, main switch etc. should be relating to the CU in the garage. supply protection is the MCB/fuse protecting the cable to your new CU. Ze is measured at souce, i.e. incoming to house CU. and Zdb at the incoming side of garage CU.

unless you have made the garage installation TT, in which case Ze is measured at the garage.

One new circuit, feeding a new DB/CU in the garage?
If so, test from house CU to new DB/CU.Obviously with both CUs isolated/turned off. Record results.
2nd tests, from new DB/CU to final circuits in garage.

Record both sets of results on one EIC, make sure it is clear what you have written down.

No need to check from the house CU to the final garage circuit, it is classed as 2 separate installs as there is a DB/CU in between the 2.
Of course, you can do it to check final Zs and continuity.

Alan.

Makes it a bit clearer thanks alan, rather confused here.

Take your normal readings at the first consumer unit DB1
then on the form 4 Description of work input. That you have added 1 new circuit new consumer unit DB2 and its location.
the form 4 is schedule of test results.
circuit description ( Garage DB2)
type of protective device ?
A
mm2 Live
mm2 CPC
(R1+R2)
IR
Polarity
ZS
RCD.Omit as already done at DB1
then on your second Form 4
heading DB2
Description of circuit New db how many ways if modified.
then perform all test as normal. well you can omit the Ze and PFC, as this is completed at the db1
input Ze and RCD trip times in Deviations section, ZDB at DB2 equals infomation transferd from origin from DB1 Zs reading.
RCD Protection via DB1 (5X Trip ?mS)
Hope this helps

For the second schedule of test results!

The main switch is the one which isolates the installation from the origin of it`s supply i.e. it does not change no matter how many sub boards you install.

How can someone have been deemed competent yet be unable to fill in an EIC for a simple job?

i would be inclined to disagree. the main switch for isolation of the garage circuits is the one in the garage and i would enter this on the cert. if i am wrong please correct me and popint me in the direction of the regulation. yes, the main switch in the house will isolate the garage and it'e supply cable, but if the supply cable is fed from a way in the house CU, then that switch would isolate the house as well, unless you refer to an MCB in the house CU as a main switch for the sub-mains.

Are we referring to the section requiring details of the main switch or circuit breaker (on the EIC) or the test result schedule?

no one knows everything, he is asking for advice, not criticism

An issue such as this comes under "basic competences" - without which you should not be installing anything.

I find it interesting that so many people are prepared to make massive allowances for such a lack of training/knowledge - but would not allow said individuals to practice in THEIR property ....

You would not believe the number of times I`ve heard the "that`s how it is nowadays" line from various "tradesmen" when faced with unsafe/shoddy work. How can someone condone crap work yet not allow the same in their own house?

and we thought some of the regs. were hard to understand! have you ever thought of setting exam questions?
