Hi all, is there a way to test elcb's It's a while since I encountered any and only during a contract to upgrade where we just ripped everything out, and replaced CU's, However I have been asked to assess some houses for a housing authority these are ex council 1950 ish with dual tarrif the T&I is not a problem but I have never subjected a ELCB to any kind of test before wil a RCD test work even as there is no L N proctection , and can some one point me at the reg covering this as I thought they had to be changed but that may well be wrong,

crowbar, hammer, and skip are the key words regarding ELCBs.

The voltage operated type can not be tested with the RCD tester. You will need to use perhaps and old Clare type tester that will induce a voltage across the coil which will activate it.

A newer current operated type which was the foreunner to the modern RCD can be tested with an RCD meter. You can tell the difference between voltage and current, the voltage types will have the main Earth going through the device.

There are no actual regs to say that you need to change them in the 17th edition, as these type of devices were not recognised in the 16th unfortunately.

Not exactly related to the thread but, is there any plans to have a on-line searchable BS7671, I know that is it were to happen we would have to be suscribers @ £?? but it would save one hellava lot of time

The short answer is 'no' the IET are working on a server-based system for multiple users within 1 organisation, allowing access to the present digital package.
