Hello All

A friend of mine who has a small unit on a local industrial estate was burgled over the weekend with quite alot of gear being nicked. Obviously he was rather upset by this, he approached me and asked if I could 'electrify' his fencing and door handles. He would prefer to damage the culprits quite badly (should they re-visit) , however I advised against it.

Anyone have some good legal ideas on how to deter these villans? my friend would prefer the use of electricity, however I have my reservations. The unit is in the middle of nowhere so an alarm would be pointless.

I think you are right to be cautious about electifying the fence, however NG gas turbine pumping stations utilise electrification of the border fence but it is installed on the inside of the fence & gates, so it must be legal in some way. Also Farmers use low current pulse fencing to keep livestock contained but not to keep undesirables out:rolleyes: Have him look into the legalities.

Alternatives?;
Rottweilers ~ messy & expensive,
Anti-personnel paint ~ never used it & would a thief really care about a spot of paint on his clothes?
Razor wire ~ I think it is now illegal
Remote alarm on the fence ~ alerts you when someone has breached the perimeter fence
Proximity sensors ~ alerts you before the fence is breached
Infrared lamps, cameras etc.

All have their pros & cons all vary in expense and complications but it all boils down to what you are protecting and its worth along with the expense of repairing the damage done by scum

Edit: Maddog must have answered whilst I was labouriously typing:p

As long as you put a warning sign on it

I think he just wants 3 bare copper cables around the perimeter, each wired to a different phase. Perhaps I'll protect it by RCD!!

I like the dust bomb idea, googled it and found a step by step guide on how to make them using party poppers!
