Afternoon from the sweaty west country!

I've got me scrumpy on chill ready for the weekend, but before I can relax I needs some help.

Customer wants me to install some electric gates for her. Except, they're not electric gates, they're just standard 6'x7' wrought iron gates currently being hand made by some smithy somewhere up in darkest north Wales who she can't now get hold of, delivery due next week.

So, can anyone point me in the direction of some decent conversion kits for a double swing-gate opening?? Motor either side won't be a problem and the foundations/pillars have yet to be designed so can be built to accommodate most things within reason. Will also be incorporating some sort of call/intercom/cctv system as it's a fair distance from the house.

Right then, where's that paddling pool gone?

Cheers Spark, they seem to be an American outfit - prefer to buy British if any other suggestions?

They are of German design if I recall, I think they are based in Yeovil.

You can buy all the parts seperate and extra modules such as induction loops (to be buried under the drive) to prevent the gates from closing on a parked car.

I will see if I can see a stockist local to you.

Well I'm only 15 minutes from Yeovil anyway! It was just the website seemed to be US based, and wanted my zip code to do a dealer search. I'll see if I can find them some other way.

Here is a stockist, Iam not sure where these are based though (after a quick google), but this will give you some idea of what is available.

I only know about this make because I wired several different systems both swing and sliding gates, for a local firm, and I needed some extra parts (Infra Red saftey sensors),

I've found what I think I'm after - stockist in Yeovil (I think it's the same stuff?!)

Cheers for the pointer!

If it is the same stuff,
the only thing I didn't really like about this system, is that the instructions come with each component/module only cover the options for that particular module rather than the whole system.
In typical German style, you have to join the dots between each instruction sheet.

It is a highly modular system and can be expanded to include things such as keypads and two way video remote entry, it can be as basic or as sophisticated as you like, but the instructions are modular too, but should not pose any real difficulty for experienced electricians.

Oh! and you must get the geometry wrt to the gate hinge and arm correct otherwise you will have nothing but problems from the start, also by law you have to have the minimum amount of safety sensors required, plus the orange flashing beacon if you are designing your own system from scratch.

I speak from both good and bad experiences lol.

With electric gates its all about the geometry of the gates and getting it right !

Underground motors are what I think are the best but only if you have the correct pivot point for the hinge to motor!

Its easier to retro fit articulated arms or rams sometimes......

Try here ACH Distribution Ltd. - Security Equipment Supplier in the UK.
I don't think there are any UK makes.... most come from Italy
Ive used most but I stick now to GIBIDI ....

Don't forget that adding a motor to a gate then makes the gate a machine and it then comes under the Machinery Directive
BSEN 12453 2001 / 12445 2001 Industrial doors and gates; Safety in use of power operated doors - Test Methods

Hope this helps
