Hi Ive got to supply drive lights and iron gates with flexi armoured and SWA respectively
do I need to protect this with an RCD I know the cable is armoured but I wondered about the gates or lights becoming live

Its not really a "gate becoming live issue" wooden gates? but you will need RCD protaction as the cable is external and buried. DOnt forget that to open the gates you may need to add control cabling LV/Data/etc which should be run away from the SWA etc and protected

External and buried cables will not need RCD protection if the entire run is SWA or equivalent.
