Hi all,

I have a small electric oven which I have been using occasionally for grilling and baking for over 2 years. Since last week whenever I try to switch it on my mains cuts off and I loose power to all the wall sockets in the house.

I have replaced the 13v amp and unplugged other items from the switches as I though the mains might be overloaded. Even with only the oven switched to the mains, same thing happens and the mains switches off instantly.

Why is this happening? Is there anything that can be done, maybe something I can buy to prevent the mains switching off?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

James
:)

thanks guys

I've just tried boiling some water on the kettle and it boils fine, sipping some tea now, :)

I haven't had the oven PAT tested.

It is the "split load" RCCD that switches off on the board, what does this mean?

thanks guys

Do you know the rating of the cooker?

I take it the mains plug has a 13amp fuse.

Sounds like it's tripping the RCD, probably the element is on the way out. Seen this a few times, it's stop heating next!!

You should be able to buy a replacement element or take it to a domestic appliance repair guy. If you think the cookers worth it

How can I check the rating of the cooker?

it has a 13amp fuse

The cooker was bought new for 140pounds two years ago. How much would cost to get it repaired? would it be worth repairing and if so would this problem happen again in the near future?

Thanks

I shouldn't worry about rating the rating of the cooker, because I don't think that's the problem.. It was me thinking out loud listing possible causes.

If it's not blowing a 13a plugtop fuse then it's obviously not a power / overcurrent problem.

I still think it's most likely the element to be honest and as JulianC has pointed out IT'S DEAD!

I would give an appliance repair guy a call if you think the cooker is worth saving.
If it is the element they're about ÂŁ25 trade, so he might charge you say ÂŁ40 - ÂŁ70
Then there's labour at how ever much he charges.
I would say it wouldn't take more than an hour and no more than 2.
So if he charges ÂŁ30 an hour...
You can see it's starting to add up.

Probably cheaper to buy new

Thanks for the very much appreciated advice.

Unfortunately I live 400 miles from Glasgow, (London)

It seems it would cost too much to repair it.

Looks like my only viable option now is buying new.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, really do appreciate.:)
