Electric Shower

C

colour

Hi could you please advise. we would like to replace our electric shower. it runs off one cold water feed. at the moment it is 7.5w and its connected to a shower pull switch, and then runs direct to the fuse board by means of a 6mm cable, some one has said anything above 7.5w should be run on a 10mm cable. what is the maximun electric shower we can run on this 6mm cable without overloading it .there seems to be more choice for 8.5w and 9.5w but not many 7.5w. thanks.

without going too deeply into derating, volt drop etc. 6mm at the worst , should handle 8.5kw.

It depends on how the cable is installed. is it in a wall, on the surface etc etc, is it in any kind of insulation, and so on. It also depends on your voltage, if it is 240 then less current.if it is nearer 230 the higher current. Under normal circumstances you would be OK at 8.5 kw on a 6mm cable, but dont take it that i'am right, there a lot of variables which on my PC i cant see. i personally uprate all showers to 10mm as a matter of course. I dont mean to sound negative about your proposal but on a 6mm cable you are near the bone for anything over 7.5kw.

Cheers.........Howard

all cable is run inside walls and along ceiling, so impossible to get at. i would say that the cable would be 1mtre to pull cord and about 18mtres to meter. Thanks.

If it was an electrician that advised u about the cable then take his advice. if not, get somebody in (a qualified spark that is) to quote u as this will cost u nothing. If u give the area u live in then there is possibly somebody on this forum who is close by and would do this for u?
