electric shower

P

pushrod

Hi - an electric shower, recently been a bit dodgy at keeping the right temperature, now supposedly taking out mcb and rcd (can't say for sure as not seen it yet) After i have checked the circuit up to the actual shower(assuming it is all ok) are there any checks i can do on the shower to see if it is repairable or what has gone wrong with it? Suspected a flow valve(?) re it going hot then very cold. But tbh very little experience with electric showers . It is an Essential 10.8 , connected to Mira i think.

Could be the elements breaking down and shorting under load, I think if the flow valve goes the shower won't turn on or off, although I'm not big on repairing them normally just get replacement for time saving, just check the supply up to it with usual tests

Could be the overheat cutout either playing up or operating because insufficient flow is causing overheating.....it sits on top of the tank and breaks the feed to the elements.

could even be poor water pressure/flow. turn shower on hot then flush the bog. if it goes cold, you've got the same problem as me ( and all the rest of our road)

pushrod - I had a couple faulty and the manufacturer sent someone to repair it. Maybe worth a try?

Otherwise probably cheaper and easier to just .... chuck it and fit a new one. Like my Hitachi SDS drill , its lasted for years but wet it self last week and weed all its grease out (down my best mates trousers !). New ones only 85+vat. Not worth trying to fix......

Thanks for the replies guys - just got back from looking at it.

IR test showed dead short between CU and isolator on L/cpc. Looked in isolator and the prune who had fitted it had nicked the insulation on the line right up inside the sheath. Although the cpc had G&Y on it was right up inside the sheath and somehow they had managed to touch. Never been this lucky in a long time when i pulled on the cable i got another 6" so could re-terminate easily :D.

The hot and cold running looks like it could well have been down to a half open stop cock - so bit of a result and a couple more bottles of wine for me (mates rates)

going hot and cold usually means the shower head needs cleaning, it impedes the water flow, which causes the heater can to overheat, and trips the overheat thermostat, the heater then cools down and the cycle repeats itself
