Electric Shower

Hi All

I've got a strange one, I've just replaced an electric shower because when you turn the shower on, the neon indicator at the switch goes off, and obviously the shower doesn't work, however, like I said I've replaced the shower but the fault remains, any ideas.

Also there seems to be supply on the neutral from the switch to the shower (only when the switch is on), is it likely to be the switch at fault, the cu seems to be wired ok but it's the old rewirable fuses and no rcd.

I'm going back Friday to replace the switch, but it's all trial and error at the moment.

sounds like the switch or a bad connection . as soon as you try and pull a load, it fails. and you should consider a CU upgrade to include RCDs.

Thanks for that, it's more or less what I thought, I've suggested a new cu but they don't want to pay for it, so I'm gonna try and talk them into a small one just for the shower.

i would insist on a RCD if only for the shower. as you are doing a like for like replacement, then it's not essential fo you to fit a RCD, but you'll sleep better if you do.

The installation manuals for these devices usually states rcd needed regardless of like for like , Manufacturers installation instructions supercede 24/7

Good point, often overlooked in a like for like replacement!

I know this is with the benefit of hindsight BUT most shower companies mention RCD's in their instructions so add it to the quote for the new shower so they see this before you start.

Customer might not be happy paying for an RCD because the new shower instructions require it, as sounds like there was nothing wrong with their old one!

Shame you didn't, test the circuit of the existing shower before talking them into a new one, at their expense I would say lessened learned.

Reading it again I nearly fell over, not only did you replace a shower which may not be faulty, but you couldn't get the new one working left site and will go back Friday, please take some test kit and common sense with you when you return so the Bill is not so high the Customer has a panic attack.

Sounds like the switch to me! I hope you're not charging for the new shower as that wasn't the fault and even a simple voltage tester would have showed that!
