Hi all,

I’m not looking to change careers already got a decent job but would love to gain more knowledge and understand different installations and regulations for domestic.

Work in an office environment so fancy a challenge. My granddad was an electrician and I have helped him do complete rewires on my dads properties and factory work.
I’m pretty screwed on and pick things up easy and more importantly got common sense. Depends on cost would consider doing the Part P for personal use only.

Would the CITY & GUILDS 2330 course be the ideal option?

Also anyone recommend some good books to scan over. Read the electrician section in my Collins DIY manual to death now!

I began retraining to enter this industry 18 months ago. Still very much learning. But have my 17th edition qual and 2391 under my belt now, in addition to a few other qualificatons.

Took a short course too and have spent a lot of money along the way.

Still learning and every job throws something new at me. But I enjoy the challenge of applying theory to practice.

C&G 2330 ( level 2 and level 3) is a good course and takes 3 years at evening classes or 2 if you do it full-time. Mind full time tends only to be 3 days a week at level 2 (the first year) and 2 days per week at level 3 (the second year) So a lot of people can do it full time and still work part-time. I am just finishing off the 2nd yearof the full time and have enjoyed it. You will have to hurry though as i think the 2330 ends in a year or so to be replaced by another qualification (mind it will probably be similar just under a different name). I am also doing what is called the 17th edition wiring regs (2382) at evening class.

i am doing this more for interest than a career change as i have taken early retirement and have plenty of spare time.

If you are interested more than commited to a career change and don't have as much spare time as me then just the level 2 is probs your best bet as that is more practical than the level 3, which is a bit more theoretical.

The book GT1 recommends is a good one for level 2 . There is also one called "electrical installation" by Brian Scadden which is excellent for both level 2 & 3. The IEE's On Site Guide is also filled with useful practical info but is quite expensive ( £20 ish ) for the size of it.
