Hey guys was just wondering if anyone had advice for me. Ive been doing electrics domestically for around for years now and have passed my 2391 papers, but i am looking to go more into the design side of electrics, i.e design circuits for different components, or fire alarm systems, ive had a look round on the internet for different jobs but not getting very far, i was just wondering if anyone has any experience or know where i can begin training to design circuits etc. Any help would be brilliant : )

Hi ,
I also would like to get into design work after 18 years on the tools.
To get an actual electrical designers job you'd need further academic study , start with the new c&g 2396 course and move onto a HND.
Or maybe try a different route as a college tutor where you can study as you work.
But it will be tough , you'll need to be good with maths , and experience in commercial and light industrial work is fairly essential too.
Good luck.

To obtain a job as a Electrical Design Engineer in industry most employers will require that you satisfy the requirements for Chartered Engineer membership of IET. As a junior or graduate you might be taken on with a good HND or BEng respectively if you satisfy the requirements for Technician Engineer membership of IET, but in times of unemployment there are lots of well qualified and experienced people for employers to choose from and that might not be sufficient to even get an interview.

do you know where i could start looking ?

You need the qualification; you need professional representation; you need brains; but, the one thing you need more than anything else is determination and confidence to be a pain in the arse and keep going when you think you are carp, just say hey, this is what I want to do for the foreseeable future .
Its a bit like marriage, you commit yourself for the rest of your life, until you get divorced !
