Hi. im new here. im 22 and currently in my last year of my electrical apprenticeship. I have just been awarded apprentice of the year and feel that i am capable of doing more if I keep pushing and working hard. I want to take my training further next year if at all possible and eventually go into the electrical industry at a higher level. Does anybody know of a course you can do which could effectively qualify you as an electrical estimator or electrical department manager. Preferably in Cornwall but not essential. If not does anybody know of an employer that I could speak with who may be able to offer a trainee position doing something similar. Any helpful thoughts or information would be great. Thankyou. Steve

electrical 'C' course is a good course to do, it would take you up to technician level according to the gospel of JIB.

3 parts to it, mathmatics, theory and project. it is quite intense and if you are a house basher or haven't went down the apprenticeship route forget about it now. usually run as 1 day per week for 30 weeks.

pass that and you should well be on your way to pen pushing in the electrical industry

P.S if you pass that then you just have the small task of telling sparks twice your age what to do and how to do it. good luck with that then lol

i wouldnt have a clue were would do the course near you bud as im from NI but there was only 2 places that did the course over here, although i would imagine there would be somewhere close by, it was run by the training colleges.
yes i did do it but unfortunatly failed the maths part and never went back to finish it, as i said it was pretty intense and alot to take in in 1 day per week format. i took it on when i started my 3rd year of my apprenticeship, as soon as you passed your module exams that gained you entry on too the course.

i did the ONC in london i think most colleges do it

only 2 of us passed it then the college offered us two the HNC for free

it is pretty hard one day a week

an ONC is worth 2 A-LEVELS

engineering students normaly take it instead of A-LEVEL MATHS and PHYSICS

or people who want to become TECH level

I would say go for the BTEC route as Vince said

With your electrical quala and HNC in electrical and electronic engineering you can choose from a wide range of different positions

Many of the positions you are looking at will reuire engineers to apply and with all due respect to the c course etc only the HNC/HND/Degree cuts it in those circles,

If you can convince the college you may be able to bypass the ONC and start a HNC straight away but I suspect you will have to take maths and science bridging courses with your previous experience, i managed to miss the ONC and bridging modules but then I am old lol I did however find the maths suprisingly challenging

Good luck with everything

I am also looking to change my career path in the electrical industry towards estimating, I have started by looking at the types of qualifications asked by employers. I have found most employer prefer a HNC in electrical engineering plus experience, therefore if your young and able to work for less money it may be beneficial to search for trainee positions and perhaps study a HNC at college/uni. This is based on my own research and opinion, hope this helps you

As far as estimating goes, if you can install it there is a good chance you can estimate it but it takes a while to get the hang of and in the meantime an employer runs the risk of losing money down the drain while you are picking things up. Years ago the rule was if you wasn't any good on site then you ended up in the office but nowadays things are slightly different and really only a HNC/HND in electrical engineering at the very least will cut it. They are popular courses and can fill up fast but expect hard graft and late nights. Good luck.
