I've seen this phrase used quite a bit but must admit I haven't chanced upon it too often until I regularly started viewing this site.

So, is it just a posh name for an electrician's mate?! If not, what's the difference between an improver and a mate?

An Electrical improver is registered with the J.I.B and his/her qualifications merit them as an electrical improver. I think you need the 2330 parts 1 & 2 plus 2 years experience on the job, backed up by a previous or current employer.

under the jib there are various grades from trainee up to technician and various inbetween, as stated above improver is a part qualified spark (quite often a fully trained spark but without all the relevant paperwork)

I wouldn't go as far as saying its a low qualified status. It is however a lower grade than an 'approved electrician'. To be given your gold card (I.e a fully qualified spark) you need your NVQ3.

Take a look at the J.I.B website it will explain it to you more:-

JIB Grading Definitions - Electrical Improver Grade

If employed by a J.I.B registered company an Electrical Improver will pick up 10.35 an hour as will a Senior Graded Electrical Trainee.

there are far too many people calling themselves 'fully qualified electricians' nowadays just because they have finished a course

Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry

check out this link and look at the grading tab gives an explanation of what is required for each level or grade in the industry

lol beat me too it

Totally agree just as they have the theory part the think they are fully qualified, I have interviewed numerous people like this and when asked basic questions about installation methods they haven't got a clue.

Its good to see that the powers to be have finally seen sense and said that you need to be in the industry carrying out practical experiance in the industry to get your qualifications like it was when the old apprenticeship was about.

Improver is a lot lower than a approved electrician as there is a grading of electrician between.
