HELLO,

I PURCHASED MY HOME IS A TWO FAMILY HOME FROM 1940 WITH ONLY ONE METER, THE BOX HOLDS 200VOLTS. I STARTED REMODELING THE ATTIC AND SEEN THAT THE HOME HAD NO GROUND SO I ASK AN ELECTRICIAN TO ADD GROUND BUT ONLY TO THE FLOORS I WAS REMODELING. COME TO FIND OUT THAT THE REST OF THE ELECTRICAL WERE OLD, NOT GROUNDED AND IN SOME CASES THE CONNECTIONS WERE A HAZARD. I ASK HOW MUCH WAS TO REPAIR AND INSTALL NEW WIRING IN THE HOUSE AND THE COMPANY WANTED TO CHARGE ME $50K. I THOUGHT THAT WAS EXCESIVE SINCE MOST OF THE LABOR WAS GOIND TO BE DONE BY MY HUSBAND WITH THE INSTRUCTION OF THE ELECTRICIAN, JUST TO SPEED UP THE PROCESS. I FELT BECAUSE I WAS A FEMALE THE GUY WANTED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE SO I LEFT IT ALONE. ANY ADVISE?

I’m an independent who works by myself and recruit help on big jobs. Totally rewireing a house is very labor intensive and the price of copper plus other materials can be pretty expensive. Having said that with your husband helping and hire a helper it could be for around $ 30,000.00 that’s what I would charge. 50K is a lot of money but hiring a company you have to pay such high overhead cost, plus truck fee, probably wanting to charge you $ 40.00 an hour for every person and paying them $ 15-20 per hour
